Race to the Top, the current administration’s flagship education policy, is the wrong way to go. Instead of fostering collaboration amongst schools, it promotes competition for allocation of federal dollars. Instead of giving support to struggling teachers, it punishes those teachers by the threat of losing their job or having their school closed. Instead of striving toward more equity across geographic boundaries, socio-economic status or race, it leads toward more inequality and segregation of our students.
Competition has no place in a free, accessible public education.
